Carbon brushes typically transfer electrical current from a stationary point to in a circuit to a rotating slipring or commutator. Pantograph collector carbons are used in transport applications to transfer current to a moving locomotive, often at high speed.
There are other applications where current has to be transferred to mobile equipment through a rail or track, where linear speed is relatively low, but current density is high.
In these cases it is common to use carbon materials, but with a very high copper content in a variety of shapes. The complexity of some of these shapes, together with the materials used and the quantities required, often lend themselves to manufacture by pressing to finished dimensions from metallurgical powders.
Strong, highly conductive materials can be produced with long service life, typically used in warehouse systems or for cranes and hoists.
Gerken has a standard range of components produced in this way and the capability to design and manufacture bespoke parts for customer requirements.
