Gerken’s unique focus on the evolution and manufacture of carbon materials and components is illustrated by our ongoing investment in research and development.

We have state-of-the-art R&D facilities in the Gerken plants in Belgium and France as well as comprehensive laboratory test facilities in Pantrac, Germany. Where necessary we collaborate with universities and other establishments to ensure we are always working at the leading edge of carbon and graphite technology.

In France, we have created an environmental test centre to replicate, as near as possible, the extremes of humidity, temperature and other conditions carbon brushes in which today’s wind turbine generators must operate.

We recognise that our materials must be continually developed to meet the demands placed on them through the quest to design faster locomotives; larger, offshore wind turbines; more efficient motors and generators - all requiring as little maintenance as possible. Our expertise is built on more than a century of carbon development and experience. Our goal is to apply that expertise to meet customers’ needs - today and in the future.
